Man Over Board

The last two weeks felt like a blur.  Up and down have traded themselves for left and right.  Day to day life has been nothing short of an MC Esher drawing.  But the sky is clearing and I will be back tomorrow with the Part VI of the Surrealist Manifesto, followed by some new articles on design and a few book suggestions.

Tony Ray-Jones?

The other day, I received another request to review the images of photographer Tony Ray-Jones.  What does everyone think of his work?  Have you heard of him, do you think he is worth his weight in salt, or is it all rubbish.  I am curious to hear your reactions because I find it strange that he keeps coming up.

How are your pictures coming?  Is the Great Compositions series and the articles on Cartier-Bresson helping your photographs?  I am curious to see the impact.

  1. Hi Adam,
I have not done any research on Tony Ray-Jones but will like to hear anything you have on him.
If it just half as interesting as any of the other artist you dissected for us, I am all ears!

  2. Hey Danni,

From what I see at the moment, he is very hit and miss. There are certainly a few strong images in his body of work, but some others that are s careless that it makes me think he did not have a firm grasp on what he was doing. Surely some will read this as sacrilege, but that is my hunch so far.

  3. As soon as I posted my comment I searched under his name and what do you know? – I have seen quite a lot of his images! Amazing the Info overload we get nowadays without really reading/taking in!
I also see what you mean, strong images but some… not.

  4. Hello Adam,
your series are helping me a great deal, and I have adopted the lecture of your blog into my self-teaching plan on improving my pictures.
